I’m a vegetarian, my boyfriend is not! What to cook for him?

March 9th, 2010

Hey Serious eaters, I’m a vegetarian and my boyfriend is not, which isn’t a problem. I’m going to be moving to Ithaca to be near him, and while we won’t be living together I do plan on making him dinner every night. I don’t have a ton of experience cooking meat, I’ve made a few things and they have turned out pretty good (or so I’ve been told) but they have been more of holiday dishes, not every day things. What are some simple, yet delicious, dishes I could cook for my boyfriend that I am not likely to screw up? Since I can’t taste the dish to see if its done, I usually go the meat thermometer route, since I would rather not serve him undercooked meat :) He is a fan of all meat, chicken, beef, pork, and game. The only thing he does not like is seafood. I’d love to make him a steak but I’m a bit worried that I will screw it up, frankly! Thanks a million :)

Sugar Rush: Best Brownies in the East Village

March 9th, 2010

[Photo: Kathy Chan] A recent Chowhound thread asked the question, “Where is the best brownie in the East Village?” Suggestions of Blackhound Bakery and Pinisi were introduced along with Ciao for Now and Something Sweet on the corner of 1st and 11th. But no, those aren’t the best spots to get your brownie fix. Instead, turn your attention to Sundaes & Cones . Look past the ice cream, to that little glass cake stand piled with a pyramid of brownies. A single dollar buys one of those dark fudgy squares. Theirs is a no-nut version, dark, and extra-moist. Or for something further east… Or for something more cake-like, go further east to Northern Spy Food Co . $1.50 for these brownies, which come studded with big walnut chunks and halves. No itty bitty chopped nuts here. These will please those looking for a slightly less intense number—the crumb is finer, each bite almost light. They are stored in a glass jar, next to a display of Liddabit caramels. Both these brownies are simple, everyday, no nonsense brownie. No frosting, no mint, nothing fussy. Aren’t those really the best type of brownies in the end? Smokin’ Joe’s 2-22-10

March 9th, 2010

It was a cold February night in Pittsburgh recently when the Food Dude made an appearance at Smokin’ Joe’s on the South Side. Kevin certainly cooked up something special for patrons who attended this Monday night event. Smokin’ Joe’s is known around the South Side for their awesome wing night specials, but on this evening Kevin decided to bring a different dish to the table. The Food Dude marinated bratwursts in 4 different Yuengling beers. The small, but intimate crowd was eager to try each flavor consisting of Lager, Porter, Black & Tan and Bock. The dish was well received by everyone, and many patrons enjoyed talking both food and beer with Kevin. The Yuengling special for the night was Yuengling bottles and Bock & Lager draughts for just $2.00! Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy this event!

Casual lunch near NYU Med. Center?

March 9th, 2010

I have to have testing done at NYU medical center (1st and 30th) and will have couple of hours in between testing and a doctor’s appointment. Are there any little lunch places around there that wouldn’t mind me taking my time? I would like to stay close by in case I have to go back to the hospital sooner. Thank you!
